Keep it small: this revisits a passage you already know. It checks a supported guess from context—not transfer to a new story, or whether you understand every word.
1 · Listen first, with the text closed

Listen through the opening exchange with Nelli and her father. There is no scene search. If stopping at the end of the exchange feels fiddly, let the audio continue to the next natural pause.
Before opening the text, answer roughly in English or Finnish:
- Does Nelli feel positive, negative, or mixed about school?
- What seems tiring for her?
One rough sentence is enough. Don’t worry if individual words are still missing.
Focused listen and text check: about 5–8 minutes. The full recording is about 14 minutes; a longer listen is optional enjoyment, not a test.
2 · Make one contextual guess
Now open the publisher’s text and read only the opening. It sets up a new school routine, early mornings, and new things and rules. In Nelli’s line, notice this short phrase:
kamalasti uusia juttuja
Before checking the answer, what do you think kamalasti means here? Give yourself a moment to guess from the surrounding ideas; a rough meaning is fine.
If you want one nudge
Nelli also says she has to wake up early and feels worn out. Is kamalasti describing what the new things are like, or how much of them there is?
Show the meaning after your guess
Here kamalasti means “a lot” or “so many.” Uusia juttuja is an informal way to say “new things.” In other contexts kamalasti can mean “terribly/awfully”; this sentence and the tiredness context support the quantity meaning.
The contrast is the point: Nelli can find school quite nice while still feeling worn out by so many new things and early starts.
Optional · one text-free replay
If it helps, replay the opening once from 0:00 with the text closed. Listen for the overall contrast and the phrase you just worked out. No need to replay the full story or search for another scene.
Optional Anki candidates · whole story
Two fresh suggestions from other parts of the story. Keep only words that are unfamiliar or slow to retrieve; these are suggestions, not cards added.
- innostua — “to get excited / become enthusiastic.” The story says Kaikki innostuivat tästä (“Everyone got excited about this”) when the children discuss club rules. Kielitoimiston sanakirja.
- perustaa — “to found or set up” (here, a club). Nelli oli perustanut hienon kerhon (“had set up a great club”). Kielitoimiston sanakirja.
The forms and story contexts were checked against the publisher’s full text. Current local Anki searches for both lemmas and the story forms found no matching notes. Two existing notes in the collection already contain the kamalasti story phrase; their presence is not evidence that the word is understood. Lesson 17’s suggestions, harmittaa and noudattaa, remain unconfirmed and are not repeated. No cards were added or changed.
One-line report
What came through before you opened the text? Before revealing the answer, what did you guess kamalasti meant—and did you infer it, already know it, or need the explanation? A short fragment is enough; mention it if the audio differed meaningfully from the publisher’s text.
