Case cues in listening

At listening speed, use an ending as a small clue about a word’s role. Aim for a rough phrase meaning—not a full grammar analysis.

Heard chunkFast clueRough meaning
paljonQuantity worda lot / much
monta viikkoamonta is followed by singular partitive viikkoamany weeks
polttoaineenpolttoaine + genitive -nof the fuel / fuel’s (fit to context)
Iranin sodanBoth nouns have a genitive -n form; read them togetherIran’s war / the war in Iran (fit to context)
tällä viikollaFixed “this week” expression; note the form viikollathis week
sohvan alleA location clue in the Green Fox scene: notice where Otto pointsunder the sofa

A useful contrast: monta viikkoa (“many weeks”) and tällä viikolla (“this week”) are different patterns. If the audio seemed to say tällä viikkoa, keep that as a tentative hearing and confirm with the transcript; tällä viikolla is the standard expression.

Story-scene check: The publisher’s text says Otto points sohvan alle (“under the sofa”) and then says he sees the fox there. That is different from the fox sitting on top of the sofa. The story text and recording have not been verified line by line, so check the audio too.

Listening shortcut: hear a familiar stem, notice just one ending or nearby quantity word, then let context supply a rough meaning. Save detailed case analysis for after the clip.
