Your story
Satu 6: Kolme pientä porsasta — Nellin ja Vihreän Ketun satuseikkailu, from DNA and SOS-Lapsikylä’s Satuillaan series. This is a children’s retelling with Nelli and a magical green fox, not a graded Finnish lesson. We are testing whether you enjoy it and whether a small supported scene is manageable.
▶ Play / download the audio (~13 minutes) · Episode page · Read the story
The publisher’s text and podcast feed were checked; the MP3 link returns audio. Exact narration/text alignment and opening timestamps have not been checked. Skip any introduction and use the scene markers below.
Before leaving · two minutes
Open or download the audio. Your target is the opening scene, from Nelli wanting to build a sandcastle indoors to her deciding to read instead—before the magical journey begins.
Three helpful anchors, checked against the publisher’s opening text:
| Listen for | Meaning |
|---|---|
| rakentaa hiekkalinnan | build a sandcastle |
| ei vain pysy kasassa | just won’t hold together |
| Luetaan sitten mieluummin jotain. | Let’s read something instead, then. |
These are support, not a vocabulary list to memorise.
Morning walk · discover the scene
- One tiny recall first: before replaying yesterday’s news, what did the government want to do? Listen to the fuel-price section once to check, then leave it behind. Yesterday’s lesson and audio.
- Listen to the opening fiction scene once. Only ask: what is Nelli trying to make, and what goes wrong? You can pause after she decides to read, or continue if stopping is awkward.
- Enjoy the whole story (~13 minutes), if it interests you. Follow whatever you can. A familiar fairy tale can support the gist, but its plot alone does not prove you understood the Finnish.
- For the rest of the 35–40-minute walk: replay the story once (~13 minutes), or switch to familiar audio or quiet. Do not keep repeating a completely opaque passage.
Keep your eyes on the route. No reading, note-taking, or precise seeking while walking.
Between walks · five-minute rescue, if possible
Recall the opening event before opening the text. Read only the opening scene on the publisher’s page, stopping when Nelli decides to read. Check at most two blocking phrases. If they still do not make sense, send them to me—we will unpack them rather than collect every unknown word.
Check the opening gist after trying
Nelli wants to build a sandcastle in the living room. The dry sand will not hold together. She adds water, but it spreads over the carpet. She and the fox decide to read instead.
If you have no screen time between walks, move this step to the evening. Do not expect an unsupported second listen to fix all the vocabulary.
Walk home · recognise, then relax
Replay the opening, especially if you checked the text at lunch. Does one anchor now connect to its meaning more quickly? Then listen to the full story again if you want.
Optional second story for variety: Nellin sadepäivä mökillä (~14 minutes) · Publisher’s text. Nelli and the fox are at a summer cottage during stormy weather. This is relaxed exploration, not another assignment. One main story plus this one supplies about 27 minutes; use remaining time for a favourite scene or quiet.
Evening · one listening win (5–10 minutes)
- From memory, say in English what went wrong in the opening.
- If needed, read that scene and check no more than two phrases.
- Listen with the text, then close it and replay just the scene.
- Report: one event you followed, one phrase that became clearer, and whether the story was enjoyable.
If most of it remains opaque, stop. Tell me where you lost the thread; we will shorten the next excerpt or add support. No whole-story comprehension target.
Short-day version: opening scene once → check its text → opening scene again. Skip the full stories. That is enough.
Anki stays separate
Keep your usual daily reviews. Optional candidate: rakentaa (to build), heard here as part of building a sandcastle—only if unfamiliar or slow to retrieve. Capture at most two useful items, check their exact wording against the source, and skip names, guesses, and easily understood words. Recommendations are not additions: the vocabulary workflow handles research, duplicate checks, audio-first previews, and explicit approval before adding to suomi - listening.
