One story, three listens

Commute out · commute back · 10–15 minute evening session

Tomorrow, use one short Yle Selkouutiset audio in three different ways. The only target is the fuel-price story; you do not have to understand the whole news bulletin.

Your audio

Uutisviikko selkosuomeksi · Sunday 4 October 2026 — a weekly simplified-Finnish news round-up. The full audio is about 3 minutes; the article has the transcript. Use it as your focused practice clip, not as the whole commute's listening.

▶ Play the audio (MP3, ~2:57) · Open Yle’s article and transcript

Optional longer listening: Yle’s Asioilla: Poliisi (~5 min) or Asioilla: Kela (~7 min) follows people with limited Finnish as they try to get service in simplified Finnish. It adds conversational listening; there is no transcript on the linked pages, so treat it as relaxed gist listening rather than a comprehension test.

Official source: Yle Selkouutiset. The passage we will revisit is headed Polttoaineen hinta (“Fuel prices”).

Morning walk · warm up, then explore (35–40 minutes)

Start with the short Selkouutiset audio once, without the text. Then try the optional Asioilla: Poliisi episode. Listen for the situation and how the visit unfolds; let unknown words pass. If you still have time, replay whichever clip you found more interesting. Re-listening is useful, not wasted time.

Keep your attention on the route. No notes or screen-checking needed while walking; download/open the audio before you set off if convenient.

Walk home · revisit and add one more (35–40 minutes)

Replay the Selkouutiset audio. This time, see what you can catch around the fuel-price story: a familiar word, a name, or a phrase about what the government may do. Then, if you like, try Asioilla: Kela as a second conversation. Aim only to follow who needs help and what happens. Use any remaining time for relaxed repeat listening—there is no requirement to fill every minute with new material.

Afterwards, recall one phrase from the news clip before looking at the article.

Evening · check one phrase (10–15 minutes)

  1. Recall first. In your own words, what do you think the fuel-price story said? Don’t check the transcript yet.
  2. Read just that section. On Yle’s article, find Polttoaineen hinta. Notice which parts match what you remember hearing. Ignore the other stories.
  3. Replay and follow the text. Listen for a familiar chunk in a different form, especially tällä viikolla (“this week”) and monta viikkoa (“many weeks”). Notice how the word form and surrounding context help it click.
  4. One last try, text closed. Replay the short story if convenient. Does one phrase arrive faster now? No need to translate every sentence.

Report back with three quick things: (1) your rough gist, (2) one or two Finnish bits you caught by ear, and (3) what helped most—recognizing the word, its ending, or its context. “I mostly lost the thread” is useful feedback too; there is no pass/fail.

Keep the routine

This reuses the three-pass listening method and the form/context cues from Lesson 2. Choose one small listening win, not perfect comprehension.
